Location
Bangkok Photography Workshop Locations
The 1-Day Photography Workshop can be designed entirely around the style of photography that you prefer and these are just a few suggestions of locations that you could include in your workshop. If you have specific destinations in Bangkok that you would like to visit or images that you would like to capture, simply get in touch with us and your workshop will be structured, as far as time, transport and geography will allow, to fit your preferences exactly.
Suggested Bangkok Photography Locations are as follows:
Street Photography
For keen street photographers looking to capture images of local faces, architecture, lifestyles and the abstract, Bangkok is an incredibly exciting location to be in. Practically every direction you turn, photo opportunities abound. Bangkok is a lively capital of Thailand, a country often referred to as the “Land of Smiles”. With a sensitive approach, photographers can expect to capture a collection of highly engaging portrait images. The workshop will teach the street photographer to see and spot photo opportunities that most would be oblivious to.
Fruit and Flower Market
The Bangkok Fruit and Flower market is a busy working market rather than a tourist attraction and escapes the tourist hordes but not the locals! This is Bangkok’s main junction particularly for flowers and the market opens at an unearthly hour of the morning each day to satisfy the export trade and ensure that vases are filled in Bangkok hotels, restaurants, shops and other public places. As you can image the colours can be amazing and during a visit to the fruit and flower market Gavin with provide you with the necessary techniques to capture the flavour of the market with a collection of context and detail shots.
Chao Phraya River
The Chao Phraya River is an artery running through the centre of Bangkok and also, to a greater extent, the cities soul. Perpetual river traffic plies up, down and across the river day and night. Getting afloat on the Chao Phraya takes you past scenes both modern and old as well as some of the cities most renowned monuments and landmarks. Leap onto a River Taxi for a great introduction to Bangkok and city orientation.
Grand Palace
The Grand Palace is a “must see” for almost every tourist visiting Bangkok with coach loads of tourist descending on it each day. This is clearly not conducive for capturing amazing images of the Grand Palace which is why, if you would like to include the Grand Palace as a location and it is well worth it, your workshop schedule would have you at the Grand Palace well before the tourist invasion. The Grand Palace is ideal for practicing compositional techniques and a perfect location for architectural photography.
Wat Arun
Almost opposite the Grand Palace in Bangkok, on the other side of the Chao Phraya River, is Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn. Rising perpendicular skywards, Wat Arun originates from the reign of Rama I but was completed in 1842 by Rama III. Mimicking the design of Angkor Temples and built in the Khmer style, Wat Arun has become an unmistakable silhouette and striking symbol of Bangkok. From Wat Arun the views over the river back towards the city are amazing and Wat Arun is also a great location for seeking out unusual compositional viewpoints.
Wat Pho
Wat Pho, the home of the giant reclining Buddha statue and infamous School of Thai Massage, but within its grounds there are countless little pockets of quiet seclusion in which to contemplate and develop your photographic technique. Wat Pho is a great location for photographers to develop creative camera control whilst discovering ways to achieve your creative vision.
Chatuchak Market (Weekends only)
Chatuchak, the Weekend Market in Bangkok; its vast and remains the largest covered market in Asia. A single day at Chatuchak will simply scratch the surface as you work your way through this labyrinth and rabbit warren. Needless to say Chatuckak lends itself for photography from street performers to people there to be seen, the food stalls, the dark and narrow alleyways, the textures, the personalities and so much more.
Bangkok Sunset
The sun sinks over Bangkok comparatively early and you need to be getting ready at 5.45pm because by 6.30 the show is all but over! Capturing the sunset is a great way to conclude your Bangkok Workshop and the best place to be for it is at a vantage point opposite Wat Arun which is tastefully floodlit and gently illuminated at sunset. Sunset is the perfect time to capture atmospheric shots of the imposing temple whilst the light over the Chao Phraya River cast by the falling sun can present winning opportunities for photography.

Itinerary
Bangkok Photography Workshop Itinerary
The itinerary for the day is actually designed entirely around you and the subjects that you would like to shoot. Below are some example itineraries for the 1-Day Bangkok Photography Course that might inspire you:
Weekday Photography Course:
The Morning
Start the Bangkok Photography Course early in the morning on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and jump onto a River Taxi bound for Pak Klong Talaat, the largest wholesale flower and vegetable market in Asia. Topics covered include camera control; preparation and anticipation; creative exposure settings; compositional guidelines; street portraiture.
Time is spent creating and constructing a photo story, pausing to review lessons learned over a mid-morning cup of tea. At the end of the morning the photography course breaks for lunch not only for sustenance but also to escape the hottest time of day when the sun is overhead and the light is flat.
The Afternoon
Reconvene at mid afternoon in time to get on location in Chinatown Bangkok during the best light of the day. During the afternoon session you consolidate all the Photography tips and techniques learned in the morning to give you more of a structured approach to photography. Before setting out on the afternoon session you are encouraged to list specific photographic goals for the afternoon so that by the end of the day you have built a portfolio of images suitable for use in a photo essay.
As dusk looms and the sun begins to sink its time to shoot some long exposures. Your vantage points could be above the traffic and neon lights of Chinatown or opposite Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn) to capture magnificent sunset images. If you choose the latter the vantage point is highly likely to be on the roof of somewhere which also dispenses “sundowners”, a perfect end to a perfect day in Bangkok!
